Hope Johnson holds a BA in Linguistics from Gordon College and an MA TESOL from Biola University. She began teaching ESOL in 2013 when she served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at a university in Russia. It was there that she developed a love for teaching English. Upon returning to her home state of Maine, Hope immediately began working toward her Masters in TESOL. While in graduate school, she taught ESL in a variety of contexts, including an English for Academic Purposes program at a local university and an online program for Chinese children. After receiving her MA, Hope worked as a Professor of ESL at an art and design school, where she taught international students the academic English skills they would need to succeed at the university level.
Hope has studied the Russian language in a number of contexts, including an intensive program administered by the US Department of State. As a language learner herself, she understands the challenges that students face and loves to encourage and empower her students to reach their personal language goals. Hope joined Empire State English in 2018.
